Battle Studies Album Review

I will be quoting myself since I have reviewed this on my other blog:

“As much as everyone else, I’m very excited to hear the new studio album of John Mayer, Battle Studies. I’ve been a fan of his work, but I’m one of the few who prefers his older albums and would rate Room for Squares as his best work. For me, that album has the most memorable hooks, great songwriting and most importantly – songs that are “relatable” – if there is such a word.

So far, I’ve heard the tracks that John Mayer prereleased as videos: “Who Says” and “Heartbreak Warfare”. Both songs are great but not as climatic as I hoped it was – Who says sounds like a lost track from Continuum, while Heartbreak Warfare has that Heavier Things vibe.

Both are of course good, don’t get me wrong but it seems like there is a shortage on topics to sing about – and singing about his “rockstar” self (Who Says) just doesn’t cut through to normal human beings like myself. In fairness – it’s still an honest song, and I can only imagine how it is to want to be “Stoned”. Heartbreak warfare on the other hand has some tasty hooks, but lacks on the “guitar” aspect (Can’t blame me for wanting more guitar after hearing John Mayer Trio :P ).

Much like Continuum, I better appreciate his songs AFTER seeing him play the song live, so probably my take on the two songs will change after a few weeks. Can’t wait to hear the new album to see where John Mayer currently stands musically. :)

To add, my current favorite tracks of this album are: Assasin and Edge of Desire :) . I’m a JM fan so I have to rate this 6 out of 5.

John Mayer is coming to MOA

Yes it’s true, John Mayer is indeed coming to Manila. You can see the details here found on his website.  Let me quote from his site:

“We are excited to announce shows for the first time ever in the Philippines and Spain! Following a two-night stand in Japan, the Battle Studies World Tour will travel to Manila, Philippines for a concert at SM MOA on May 16th. Ticketing information will be announced as it is available on the TOUR page.”

Now this is one event I am sure every musician will be excited about.  I hope I can get good seats :)

“Humanap ka ng panget” – Tagalized?

I have high respects for the man, who doesn’t know Andrew E?  His songs are a part of my childhood, and I’m sure most of the people would say the same.  It is sad to see though that the famous song’s lyrics is actually just a “Tagalized” version of “Find an Ugly Woman” by Cash Money Marvelous. I’m not sure if he claimed otherwise but I do remember finding the idea funny and original – but looks like it is not. See and hear for yourself and you be the judge.

Currently Listening to: Coyotes by Jason Mraz

There are some songs that doesn’t quite cut it when you listen to them in your CD players.  These are songs that you tend to skip, definitely not a favorite track.  Such is the fate of this particular song – Coyotes.  That is until I saw this Live version in Youtube.  What else can I say – my jaw dropped.  Now this is a favorite and probably yours too after watching the vid I embedded…

We Are the World 25 For Haiti Video

We are the World 25 For Haiti Video is out. I can’t believe it’s already 25 years since the first We are the World Music video came out. So I was only three years old at the time but I remember it like it was yesterday. I’m embarrass to say that I don’t know most of the artists now in the video – believe it or not I can only identify a few of them unlike the original where I know all of the singers. Still, it was a nice gesture for the different artists to make this in tribute for the people of Haiti.
Michael Jackson’s piece was included in this video together with his sister, Janet Jackson. Brought tears into my eyes when I saw him again singing and so young too. Reminds me that life is short and we have to make the most of it.

Here is the We are the World 25 For Haiti Video.

Recorded on February 1st, 2010, in the same studio as the original 25 years earlier (Henson Recording Studios, formerly A&M Recording Studios) “We Are The World 25 For Haiti”, in which Jones and Richie serve as executive producers and producers, was created in collaboration with executive producers Wyclef Jean, Randy Phillips and Peter Tortorici; producers Humberto Gattica and RedOne; and co-producers Rickey Minor, Mervyn Warren and Patti Austin to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the rebuilding of Haiti.

Academy Award-winning writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), whose own personal efforts as well as those of Artists for Peace and Justice have already saved countless lives in Haiti, filmed the private recording session to create the accompanying video and behind-the-scenes production, and serves as Film Director and as an Executive Producer with Jones, Richie, Jean, Phillips and Tortorici.

The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of We Are The World 25 For Haiti embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.

Taylor Swift Grammy Controversy

ve you heard about the Taylor Swift Grammy Controversy? She has recently won an impressive four Grammy Awards and the youngest person ever to won the much coveted Album of the Year award but her performance at the Grammy made people think twice if she deserves her four awards.
Taylor Swift performed three songs during the Grammy’s but they said her second song was off-key. I watched it and it’s not really the best performance I’ve seen.  Here’s the video.

I think they’re right. It’s not good but I still think she deserves her award. I’m not a music person, I don’t listen to radio anymore, and I don’t watch TV that much but one way or another this song has gotten through me and I had no clue it was her’s. I just love her song, “You Belong With Me, and it has gotten through me one way or another.
