We have been waiting for a sequel for Cars, and when we heard that it was showing this August, we planned carefully to watch it ASAP. The day that Pixar’s Cars 2 came out, we immediately went to the nearest cinema and watched the movie. Since we were rushing, we didn’t get to see it on 3D, and I guess I’m glad we didn’t. I was a fan of the first movie, the graphics were nice, the sound tracks were solid and the story was consistent.
Now after watching Cars 2, here are the things I noticed:
- Graphics was improved, the animators worked hard, specially on the lavish backgrounds – copying how the real cities looked like. This is where the sequel outdid the first one.
- Sound track was not as good as the original cars. I can still remember the song “Life is a highway” from the original movie but I can’t recall any of the songs on Cars2. Any fan of racing knows that the sound track makes or breaks this particular genre.
- Story, I was unimpressed with the story. There was still so much to explore with the current cast, so much aspect of normal Car life other than racing that could have been focused on, there are just a number of alternative stories that could have been more realistic. Instead, Pixar decided to turn Cars 2 into a James Bond type film, complete with spy work, dangerous missions, high tech gear and weapons, explosive scenes and cute girls. The graphics were nice and all that but but it instead of watching cars, it felt like I was watching an animated 3D James Bond film. It’s like getting Chiropractor Jobs when you studied dermatology!
I was dumbfounded because the story was a side tracked, rather the sidetrack became the main story! To think it was a world grand prix, it should have focused on racing, maintenance, advertisements, team work and other the interesting topics. Why focus more time and attention on the spy vs conspiracy plot? With all the things that were happening, a lot of the transitions of the film became unclear…
To be fair, I did enjoy the movie, because it is THE sequel to Cars, and since it is THE sequel to a great movie, I was disappointed with the quality of the story that they went after.
I give this movie 4 stars. I gave it a higher score just because my son loved it…
