Barney And Friends: An Educational Children’s Program

Written by Don Gregory

Having a two year old daughter and a 3 year old niece, I find myself subjected to more than my fair share of children’s television shows. Because we have DVR Deals, there are children’s shows available nearly 24 hours a day. My favorite of the numerous children’s shows we watch is Barney And Friends.

I like Barney for several reasons, the first being that it is not animated. I can only take so many extra colorful cartoons in one day! I like that there are real kids on the show and that there are different age groups represented. Barney usually teaches one or more important lesson per episode, and many of them are lessons regarding friendship, which is a very important thing for kids to learn. They make school look like fun. Most of the episodes are centered in some way around school and learning. They read a lot which is an important thing for children to get in the habit of doing.

Barney and friends also incorporates a lot of music. Each episode begins and ends with a song, as well as several songs in between. The songs that they sing are infectiously catchy, and they teach kids about animals, shapes, and nature.

Last but not least, Barney encourages imaginative play. After all, the whole idea for the show is the children imagining that their Barney doll comes to life and plays with them!
