With the world currently in the middle of an “epidemic” of obesity and overweightedness, there is a rallying cry to lose weight and to switch to a healthier lifestyle. Losing weight, however, requires discipline in the observance of a healthy diet and increasing physical activity through exercise.
Although there are several diet programs in books, TV and DVDs, it is important to find the diet that is right for you. Most diets involve the total elimination of foods, specifically carbohydrates and fats, which build up calories. However, doctors, nutritionists and dietitians prefer that a person eat a balanced diet while reducing intake of high calorie foods and drinks. Junk foods like chips and softdrinks are substituted with celery or carrot sticks with a low-cal dip or dressing and healthy juices. It is highly recommended to consult with a medical or nutrition professional, who will help in planning a diet, food or menu schedule that is tailored for your personal needs. For those with diabetes and other medical conditions, having a doctor or nutritionist to supervise the diet will prevent aggravation of these diseases or exacerbation of troublesome symptoms.
No diet program would be effective without exercise. Exercise not only aids in burning excess calories and fats. It also promotes the optimum functioning of the body’s various metabolic processes and builds up immunity, stamina and endurance.
Certain individuals look for “quick weight loss” promises offered by over-the-counter diet pills. Sadly, only a few of these, such as Orlistat, have been documented to be effective through extensive scientific research. Others have been found to produce dangerous side effects. Weight loss products containing ephedra and sibutramine have been banned by the FDA for causing heart attacks and strokes. Always consult with your doctor before taking any diet pills.
There is no easy way to losing weight. It is only through patience and discipline in observing a diet regimen and exercise program that one could attain not only weight loss, but also overall good health.
